She came to him that day
-- breathless --
fully clothed
in the shallow of the pool
on a hot summer's day
crying not caring
who was watching
and holding firm his face
between the blood red nails
of her hands.
He held her and rocked.
His heart beat steadily next to her swift one,
as she spilled troubled thoughts of need
between gasps, "I am plain ... average ....
You see in me ... brightness of spirit ...
depth of intrigue ....
It is plain ... to me ...
love ...
love ...
love ...."
He walks her to her guardian's home,
holding her trembling hand.
She is quiet, as he hums.
Cicadas singing wanes,
as a full-breasted turtle dove coos,
and the wind picks up and rushes
through the fast held leaves.
He inhales
the fresh scent of her hair
and exhales the hushed words,
"For seventeen years,
we both have breathed life.
For one special year,
we have breathed together.
Now, I say 'yes' to your doubts,
for we have arrived to meet
at our hearts' bridge
to timeless love."
She presses her lips to his strong hand.
He peers down at her through deep-set eyes
and whispers, "You should
buy a bathing suit. I can teach you to swim."
