Amidst the shadows the darkness moves,
Creeping restlessly through silent streets.
It yawns and spreads over the town
And curls up round the houses to sleep.
The people have long shut their doors
To keep out the cold of the night.
But the coldest place was not outside,
But in the depths of their own hearts.
A cruel silence crept around,
Its eyes seem cold and distant.
In the churchyard, a figure stands
By a cross dug into the grass.
So what, I ask is so special
About this winter’s night?
They tell me it is here where I stand
Where they last took their flight.
When freedom was free and no price to pay
For those who came home for tea.
But now, I find myself hidden here… lost and all alone.
I’ll hide here forever, I fear, in the place of no return.
Where the restless sleep on and on,
In this place where doves do cry.
A child sits alone in the street, wrapped in darkness’s arms.
Weeping for what she could have known
Had she stayed back at home.
For here there is no one, not even a light to guide you.
If you see a friendly face, you’ll be lucky.
If they greet you, I’ll be surprised.
But if they sneer and curse you,
My friend, please do not fear.
For you see, it’s all we have known out here
In these lonely streets of hell.
So I sit here on this damp wall
Writing this pointless verse.
Oh why, oh why do they never try?
Do they want to be here forever?
Do they fear what is out there over the hills?
Or do they even care?
They tell me you can’t escape it.
It’s a feeling like no other.
Once you’re here you can’t go back.
Not at all, my dear friend.
It’s like a sense of belonging in this strange world
Of darkness.
We fear that if we ever love,
It may soon wither and die.
So instead, we let our spirits go,
To take the place of love.
And we sit all alone out here in the dark,
In this place where doves do cry.
Inspired by doves and crying being said in one scentance. Wierd, eh?

A dark and touching write that captures the loneliness and fear in each of us... don't mistake fear for coldness. A wonderfully written poem... from someone who needn't fear...
Ken
BTW - Welcome to "For The Serious Poet" You will be appreciated and valued... and no doves cry.

thank you... I know doves don't cry... that's why i hoped it would be effective. You mistake me. I have many reasons to fear... i am not the average secure teenager who writes poetry for talent or 'fun'. but... that's another road I see no reason to walk down just yet.... thanks for your comment, glad you liked it?
