watching the tendrils of steam waft and dissipate like fleeing specters
as I find myself straining to recall a time once spent
stomping wild mushrooms into russet clouds of spore dust
as my mother sat with her legs crossed
atop a worn bed sheet that served as a makeshift picnic blanket
And yet somehow
even at the tender age of three
I had been astutely aware of life’s frailty
finding myself slyly studying my mom’s features from within my peripherals
feverishly trying to commit her to memory
even as
I keenly remember being mesmerized by her docile strength
--much like the proverbial apple clinging determinedly to its tree
“Can I get you anything else?”
Shaking my head no,
I clumsily stumble face-to-face with the reality of the empty seat across from me containing nothing more than long ago phantoms
Fishing in my purse, I grab some loose change to pay for the ignored cup of tea that long grew cold

I think this is a very well scripted piece. It allows the reader to see into your mind. I love the use of proverb and imagery to convey your points. A keen awareness is the second greatest gift we have, life being the first. For without life, these gifts wouldn't exist. Although many let all of mother nature's gifts go to waste.
The earlier you gain awareness the better. I've always been curious but it is only recently that I have put my gifts and social attributes to good use. -

Thank you as I am unsure how I really feel about this. It was inspired by 5 words given via a contest and although they were happy words I sorta went off into a darker place in my mind. I think one of the things that pains me is my very fleeting childhood and not truly having family or an active mother in my life.
