Where the Blacktop Ends

I used to live in the city
within concrete confines,
a dull-gray kaleidoscope
with sparse hints of color.
Yes, yes, of course
many streets were lined
with majestic pines,
but where I grew up:
where the blacktop ended,
it was usually a dead end ~
with just an ounce of shrubbery.

Hard-rock concerts
under big-city lights
was all fine and good back then,
but I'll tell ya what:
outside my front door,
at this very moment,
is a beautiful sunrise
cascading over snow-tinted
mountaintops,
accompanied by a gentle wind chime.

Resting on the couch near me
is my Beloved, my bride ~
she wonders if maybe I miss
my previous life.
Honestly, yes, I do reminisce ~
but those dull grays pale
compared to where I now call home.

To me, this is my freedom,
living in the open with my love.
