They say beauty is only skin deep
But what is beauty when skin deep isn't deep at all?
Is it in the wiry limbs supporting the paper thin abdomen?
Or is it composed within the frail movements she struggles to make?
Perhaps it's the yellowed teeth tainted from her frequent visits to her porcelain consolidate?
Or just maybe in the gaunt expression stretched taut against her skull?
Could it be expressed through her excessive exercise routine?
More like the slow, painful bites she takes to cover her pitiless existence
Closer to the jutting hip bones poking anyone who nears
And her outlined rib cage perfectly rigged like the fingers on a hand
Just as easily expressed through her graceful glide carrying the weight of air
Her petite frame cautiously poised for defense at the slightest incriminating comment
Her fierce outward expression assisted by her ravaged appearance
Is that the true definition of beauty?
If only skin deep of course
One could only dream to be so gorgeous

I'm guessing you're talking about anorexia here?
Beautifully written poem, by the way. I love the descriptions. -
Very nice. Excellent use of sarcasm to get your point across. If only we lived in a world where women loved their bodies regardless and weren't subjected to the harsh scrutiny of a media driven society. But alas, we are. We have been for a while. However, this poem comforts me. It shows me that there are people out there with some sanity in this insane world. Excellent write.
