The Day Before Christmas

There is no one in the restaurant
So she finds a table and sits
The waitress comes and gets the order
She drinks a cup of coffee
and reads her twelve steps.

She likes the warmth of holiday songs,
But sometimes they remind her
How alone she has been.
How alone she has been for a long time.

She remembers Christmases
with family and friends.
Bright shinny faces of her children
It did not take long
for her to drink them away.
once the drinking started.

All the way to a divorce
All the way beyond pain.
All the way to acts
that seem unforgiving.

The drunken rut she fell into.
Losing herself during those years
in bar room lullabies
searching through bottles
that had no answers.

For drugs that only numbed
but never healed.
as she prostituted herself away
for a fix with faceless men.

She was rock bottom when she turned.
Somehow she has come back this far
where she feels and has made peace with herself
finding a way for forgive those sins
acted out under the glow of a whiskey moon.

She drinks her coffee
and looks at the address.
Pulls out her cell phone
and hears the voice of her daughter
for the first time in years.

This poem is amazing. I love the 5th and 6th stanza.
    And the ending.

    It's very sad lonely stuff.

Thank you for entering my contest with this poem the word "shiny" only had one "n" as opposed to two like you have - but other than that this is a very well written poem I like the story that it tells and the way that it reminds the reader that Christmas is primarily about hope and love - I'm glad that this had an inspiring ending!

    Keep writing

I found this captivating, a sad read indeed but it made me think of how blessed we are and wonder how people can wind up in that position. Nice work!

    Love,
