All ye who now regard this sculpted stone
which, in this castle courtyard, stands before
the fount to honour D-16 alone,
pause and remember him who is no more.
M-C in private, even as she wept,
did lend her talent and her artistry
to labour through the night while others slept
and carve this monument for all to see.
Yet not in vain were Aesthete’s skills or tears,
for this memorial to the deceased
will testify, as tribute through the years,
to him who, of his siblings, was the least.
Although in life, the smallest of them all,
here, in this angel’s arms he now stands tall.
Hugh Wyles, (R.) November 26th.2008.
Author notes
If some uncouth, unfeeling knave should laugh
and throw cigar butts at the angel’s feet,
let him now know - this tasteful cenotaph
was shaped by CARR, the world-acclaimed ‘Aesthete’.
Some dignitaries at D-16’s wake
had come to me with serious request,
donating toward something for his sake
that as memorial might serve him best.
With Aesthete’s skilful work above now ended,
I’m sure all will agree she’s done him splendid.

As I said before, it's an absolutely lovely poem. A poem in answer is being worked on slowly.

I think it's an absolutely lovely poem. I wrote one to my budgie, which I'm now revising, but I don't think it came out nearly as well! It was very sweet.

I commented on this already, but perhaps not on the whole tragedy: I believe D-16 should be renamed. He should take to the hereafter the name of that Great Drake in the sky, forever known for how he fared on all of the world's great ponds, Sir Francis Drake. Hereafter let him be known as Sir Francis Drakeling Sixteen.

Your excellent posthumous title is well-considered but I am in a quandary as to how it would scan within the metrical restrictions of iambic pentameter, even if abridged to SFD-16. (or SFDXVI)

So now the little duckling has two sets of wings: one here, and one in heaven! What a lovely little poem and a lovely sentiment. Victor's memorial was only painted on a garden stone!

The best art
comes from strong emotion, and here is no exception: both the image of the statue with touching detail of D16 in the angel's arms, and this sonnet to extol it are very well done.
May I point out that D is the Roman numeral 500?
All the best wishes, as ever.

Beautiful tribute to the quacky deceased
and the angel is equally beautiful.
May he quack in peace in bird's heaven

So if I can contract M-C, may I have a statue of my beloved "Poopsie the Snowman" who passed away mysteriously in 1998? One night I set him near the wood stove to warm up...the next morning there he was, just a puddle remained...mysterious indeed!
The dual skills of M-C and H-W a fine collaboration and tribute to poor little Quackers.
I would suggest that when you go to the pond to talk to ducks 1-14 that you maybe find them each a name...you are bound to create a sense of inferiority and worthlessness in them by not giving each a personal identity...far be it for me to say but I wonder about D15's low self-esteem, and worry that maybe his demise was self-afflicted.

This is a lovely and loving dedication to tiny D-16, Hugh. And Aesthete's sculpture is a beautiful symbol of our feelings. May he rest in peace.
Mama and Papa must grieve for him, though their spirits are raised by being surrounded by the rest of their little family. (Did I say 'little??)

Dear Hugh,
I am so please that Aesthete sculptured such a beautiful stone as a memorial for our dear departed D16 and that it will be placed in the courtyard near the fount, he'll love that, being near the water and his Mum and Dad and siblings can come and visit him, as long as they don't poop on the fountain.
Your poem is wonderful my friend.

Hugh, the angel and the tiny feathered one
appeared on the drawing paper, between
place cards I was lettering for Thanksgiving.
So both are surrounded by sentiments of
thanks and live and appreciation!
Your words, nicely composed, as always, poet.

Very nicely done!
Dear Hugh,
It is indeed a tasteful cenotaph carved as a memorial for D-16, whose short life will be noted and long remembered thanks to Aesthete's artistry.
Very sorry to learn of the heroic father who lost his life trying to save the lives of his two sons. May they rest in peace together until the final judgment when they shall be with God for eternity.
Love and Hugs,
Maureen

Evidently the Father took the boys fishing on a wharf. The four year old playing with the pram his little brother was in went into the sea. The father jumped in to save them and they all drowned. Dreadful for the poor mother to lose her whole family like that.
Accidents can happen in a moment but last for a lifetime.

Terrific Aries
There was a tragic event here recently.A Father
died trying to save the lives of his 15month & 4year
old sons. They were all buried together,a son in each
of the Father's arms.It is sickening to see idiots
desecrating beautiful things.Even a cenotaph.

Dear Aries,
Thankyou. That is indeed a terrible tragedy. How did it happen?
