She hugs the rain
She knows they're not
His cold kisses
Cutting tracks in the mascara on her cheeks

Rivulets carrying their past
Further away from this eternal moment
Devout, devoted
To a life that will not, cannot be
Any longer

She asks the clouds
She knows they won't
Tell her where he is,
How he is, whether he misses her or no

Drops of sweet memories
Evaporate, become the steam
Of half-forgotten embraces that never go away
Completely
Devout, devoted
To a love that likely
Wasn't there in the first place

She hugs herself
She knows that's not
Nearly as good as it felt
When he held her.

Author notes

I started this as a poem about someone I miss and onto whom I projected feelings she likely doesn't have, but it ended up becoming about a widow who's just lost her husband. Specifically, it's about my mom. Please enjoy.

Thanks.

    beautiful!
it left me feeling lost and lonely.
and so much so that it is nearly unbearable.
every line fit together so perfectly.

    amazing and unforgettable!

    emotional and inspiring

    Gio,

I have always been an admirer of your work. You are a completely different person on paper. You said that you started this poem for a past love, but it turned into a poem about your mother. It grasps both stories, but speaks the truth so well for the pain of losing a loved one.

You wrote once, "any pain is a worthy price to pay for one embrace"... and this is what I saw while reading this poem. How one will do anything for just one more chance to feel a hand against a cheek, one more glance into eternal eyes, one more minute of the day to tell someone how you truely feel about them, before you know it, it's gone..

Thanks for writing. Don't ever stop

    Amazing

Incredible imagery. This left me with a sense of longing and despair. Wonderfully short and simple yet powerful and moving.

"Drops of sweet memories Evaporate"...jolting reality.

You have a gift for conveying intense emotion in such short pieces. Well done!

    Wow....

Gio, this is utterly beautiful. I'm stunned.

I'm wondering if you'd mind me perhaps using it for a song at some point in the future? Full credit, obviously... I've borrowed one of Chris's (Scarlet Obsession) for our last CD (again, with full credit) and it's turned out to be my fave so far.

    xxx
