Maybe I was saved for a while
A cold night in a crowded hall
A million people, jostled into one
Fate, chance, destiny
They collided together
That great, inexplicable... us?
You move closer to me,
And I to you
And we stand in an awkward silence
My finger flicks ash from my cigarette stub
You gulp your beer
In silence, we stand
In the small hours of the morning
I feel your hand on my back
Gentle, soothing, a tingle
"Meet me out back, I know a place."
And I'm moved at once, swept into the crowds
Through the lasers and flashing lights
And past the faces of my suspicious friends
"Look, he's found someone."
The morning will be full of texts and questions.
But tonight, for the hour, it will be hours
The night is cold, I'm thinking
"You're being stupid, wasting your time."
The nightclub thumps behind me as I leave it
My mind is spinning, I can barely walk
Across the gravel, there you stand
Some solitary figure, as nervous as me
I greet with an awkward smile
You return it, heartfelt
The river is quiet tonight
Streetlights reflected on a glittering surface
Morning air is cold, and the night's sky black
We press together, warm at once
I have your back against a wall
My hands, holding on tight
Your kiss is too powerful
Affection turns to some kind of mouth-wrestle
And only as time ticks by, do we speak
"I know you from before."
"I don't remember that night."
We gasp gently, secrets exchanged between
Desperate gulps of one another's breaths
And the night moves on, slowly
We've finished now, you're rushing
"I'm gunna be killed."
I'm wordless, I don't know what to say
All I can do is light up another cigarette
And take a relaxing pull
"I'll walk you home, or are you okay?"
"I'm fine."
"No bother."
And there you go, past the traffic lights
I see your form vanish beyond the corner
"See yah," you say.
"Bye," I call back.
I stamp out my cigarette
And disappear into the night.
