Garden Tears

Soft strains filled my ears
As down my face flowed rivers of tears.
The heavens sparkled with delight;
For me 'twas but a horrible night.

It needed only a false truth
To break me from this hot pursuit.
And yet it wasn't me that began
The hunt that led to a scandalous sham.

I, oh silly I, took him at his word,
Spoken as tenderly as never before heard
By these young ears of mine,
That never knew one worth more than a dime.

'Neath the pale moonlight,
In the glow of a candle light,
He took me deep in his arms,
And cast o'er me his wily charms.

I listened, a willing victim to his spell,
And for months thought that all was well.
Until a siren, enchanting, alluring,
Walked in on his arm one unexpected evening.

The shock I knew was something great.
It was all new to me at any rate.
With chin up bravely I forced a smile;
He chatted with ease an eternally long while.

I bit my lip to keep from crying.
Nothing could sooth me - not for lack of trying.
Into the garden I quickly fled,
And knelt in the grass while my heart bled.
