Once Upon a Staircase...

My internal drum falters
Stuttering as your warm hazel eyes meet mine
Electricity pulses through the air
Crackling with potential.

Did Fate bring us here?
Intertwined through the vines of unknown friendships
Separated physically by a suburban oak strewn street
Dwelling in realms leagues apart for too long.

The energy building as you sit across from me
Stairway at my back a concrete reminder of my past
Resting on the first stair, I search your honest eyes.
Sincere. Open-hearted grin, you ask for my name again.

How was I to know that you would be the one?
Over a year together and still the sight of your grin,
the whiff of your cologne, catapult me into my fairy tale
Where my heart still falters, and my breath still catches
With every "I love you" grin, I happily fall even deeper.

Author notes

It has probably been over a year since I wrote a new poem, so here's to me diving back in again. I feel like I finally realized that life isn't about trying to steady yourself, it's about riding the wave and bending when the wind blows too hard. It is about surviving.
