A Dozen Roses For Precious (I’ll Make It Up To You)

I can’t afford a dozen roses so often,
not with my salary;

damn wanna-be poet checks—
counterfeit dreams I tried to cash.

No job will keep me, maybe
work is a gold-digging woman; use
me up until I’m no more.

Or—
maybe, I won’t keep her, because
I know I’m destined
for something great,

some day.

Until then,
I can’t afford a dozen roses so often,
not right now, but soon.

I hope today a poem will do,
and maybe tomorrow as well.

If a year passes, and your vase
sits humble with stale water,
I ask that you leave me.

Or—
loan me a few bucks
for smokes and beer, but only
the cheap beer, the one I deserve.

Afterwards, I’ll show myself
the way out, and return someday, a
wealthy man.

Only you will love another
in the time that passed, and I’ll
give a dozen roses to a stranger.

    now this

this speaks to my heart. to my inner poet .

"maybe, I won’t keep her, because
    I know I’m destined
    for something great,"

    resonating. it's a whole story.

    "damn wanna-be poet checks—
counterfeit dreams I tried to cash."

it finds a well inside of me and begins to rain to fill it up. i'm sooo glad you write here.

That was beautiful and deep. I know the feeling about those jobs and how you dont feel write because you know that you are destined for somthing so much more greater than what you are doing now. But if you got you a good one she'll be with you from poems until a dozen roses. great job.

Who was asking you for flowers and how come I don't know about it. Why do you feel like you only deserve the cheap stuff?
