I walk daily through the shadow of the Valley of Death
and I see the evil around me
I tumble towards a hurtling end
certain of my humanity
....and I remember the moments
in the sun
where my family surrounded me
I have such memories
of my loved ones
and I miss their laughter
around me
My home is in my mind
as my heart is in my body
For there are those who wish
me harm
and truly they surround me
Like the blackest night
without light
my thoughts are lost
in memories
Where Mom and Dad
and Gram are sad
As I leave
my family
Now the noise wakens
even the dead
and the flashes pulse
my blood
Here where anyone
can be the enemy
and metal stops my
.......breath

This is a very evocative poem. You are well on your way to writing sharp-edged free verse. I am finding many are drawn to such theme at this tiem of eyar and it is good to stop and remember. thank you for entering.
BTW, while the background is awesome, I wish that we could insert a table of color aroudn our words to highlight them better, don't you? -

Thank You
There is at this time of Thanksgiving here in the USA, thoughts that stray towards the sacrifices of so many who have given up all they could have been.
