It was a day trip to the seaside
A special treat for everyone
When that day arrived
Surprise, the rain just came pouring down
My nose pressed on the damp window
waiting for the sun to shine through
When I saw the fisherman mending his nets
Oblivious to the weather, his deft hands continuing to sew
I ran across, to get a closer look, at this old man of the sea
his face and hands like leather, his hair as white as snow
He beckoned me to sit by him, my heart was all aglow
He told me tales of great wonders about the enormity of the seas
How, once he was marooned on an island, and lived on fruit from the trees
He recalled the biggest fish he caught that the net could not hold
Of a blue whale so beautiful that, it was worth it's weight in gold
All this time he continued, to mend his net
Only stopping for a puff of his pipe, cupping the match, so it would not get wet
His oilskin protected me, he sheltered me within his arms,
Listening to the lilt in his voice, I was lost in the magic of his charms
Sam, the fisherman, Old Salt of the Sea
Made that daytrip memorable, which means the world to me.
