Mary of Lazarus

her naked arms dangling
like a secret or remnants
of a once beautiful dress
tattered and decaying-

layers thick with texture
cling to slumbering torsos
on blankets of bones-

mother's lamp oil eyes
witness her muted children
hanged from the devil's tree-

to be born again

This is an unexpected surprise (meaning in the contest). I appreciate the work of this poem and the research you did on Mary, Manuel's muse for the contest. It is a well written poem that shows sophistication.

Masterfully written. I know inwardly, when something meets me poetically, I am urged to write! This is potent and so precise. "naked arms dangling like a secret or remnants...." Damn...great stuff.
