About to embark upon his new career
With his mother shedding a tenative tear,
Our new recruit begins his Army life
At a firebase overseas far from his wife.
He will serve along side the other young men,
His buddies, Johnson, Melendez, and Nguyen.
These young men chose to serve our nation;
I look upon them with deep admiration.
Some speaking with mockery and derision
Ask me how I can support his decision.
Would I rather a lawyer or M.B.A.?
A high-priced crook or a swindler did you say?
I am proud that he will serve and protect.
His achievements are something I can respect.
It is for all Americans that these men serve
And it's our way of life that they preserve.

Superb
Aye, indeed, I agree; yet maybe someday war will be as outmoded as a dinosaur, so young men and women, from any and all nations, will not need to lose their lives because of the egotistical nature of politicians; terrorists, etc. Very well written, my friend. -

Thank you for reading and commenting. I am glad you enjoyed the poem. I do not have an confidence that there will ever be a time when there is no war. There is too much selfishness in the world.

Ah, my friend, I do understand; yet "If wishes were fishes, we would all have a fry".
