On the Loss of the Sixteenth Duckling

Please note, this note is sent
as regret to leaven our lament:

In a brood that's so prolific
it's too easy to lose count
above a dozen. To be specific,
for a bird-brain tantamount
to quantum theory to our mind.

But I'll endeavour to be kind.
These ducks are our old friends,
without doubt, and quite refined.
The kind that doubt suspends
and no discrepancies recounts!

Though anthropomorphic the intent
still we feel just what it meant.

With much regret,
Terry

Author notes

In reply to the notice that one of the sixteen little ducklings, the smallest, had gone missing, and laments and mourning in its demise was the overwhelming response, though I regret the loss, this provides contrast.

I have mixed feelings about having sent this in such a sad situation. How do you feel?

The Memorial Service as described by Hugh
Was a blessing to all concerned.
It helped us ease and all get though
the concern dear little D16 had earned.

    Dear Terry,

One cannot always fathom God's intent
nor those He takes away can any save
and D16, though missed, is heaven-sent
for which, like D & J, we must be brave.

When parents lose a duckling through God's Will,
though they may seem inept to keep the score,
they carry on and keep stiff upper bill
as other ducks have done in years before.

We hope you have received your invitation to attend tomorrow's Memorial Service for D16. Please note that the four front rows of pews are reserved for visiting dignitaries.

      There in spirit...

      Ah, but that was clever!

      Perhaps that is why.
      It's that stiff upper bill
      that's endemic to the clan.

      Among genus Anatidae
      common to all birds, still
it's so seldom seen in Man!

There is sadness in the loss of any life,
whether to illness, accident or strife.
    The loss of little D16
gives pause to wonder what it means.

We smile at the contrast, and wear black. You are probably right about the feelings of the parents (So many ducklings, one, two.... um, one, two...).

      Were any hopes of erudition
      part of a duck's condition
      it would be a bore.

      When the ducklings scatter
      does counting really matter
      but to the one more?

Rather like Social commentary and the Homeless.
