His outstretched hands
Grabs everyone’s attention
As his body collapses on the pavement
A space clears
As the blood runs and puddles
Weak, torn, and beaten
He’s been bleeding too long
His crying gasps
Seem unheard
As the fear and repulsion
Plays in the crowd’s eyes
They don’t know
Where he comes
Or where he goes
As they cower further
Finally, a man emerges
From amongst them
And stoops to help him
Peel him from the ground
With a reassuring nod
And a fragile hand
He sends him on his way
Staring empathetically after him
On the stranger goes
With a new strength to carry on
His destination unknown
Only a trail of blood to follow

Lend a hand, you never know when you'll be the one looking for that outstretched hand.
