Shadow Within

Missing image

I dance but there's no one to dance with
I love but have no one near me to feel it

I am lost in time in the shadow of decay

And I'm alone at night in the darkness

 

I can't see anything at all in my life

Does the sun surround me every day?

I don't know if you can see my face

I’m not sure I’m alive and breathing

 

I seem to have really lost my way

I dream but there is no one to share it
If I live - I live in the shadows alone

Will I ever again see the light of day?

 

This shadow within holds me close

It is always me who is lonely the most

Contest prompt: "In the shadows"

"Poetry is the art of substantiating shadows." ~ Edmund Burke

Where there is a sun there is also the shadows. Sometimes the good things that you left behind seem to cast shadows at some point.

When you stand in the shadow you really miss the sun. Because not earlier than at that point you really realise where you are coming from. How can you be aware and know about light before you will see the darkness? If you are happy to be in the sun, how can you appreciate it? And you can't before you have lost the place in the light and you stand in the shadows.

But in a way the shadows are sometimes good too. Because just by standing in the light it would get quite dull I think. The shadows change the scenery. And without differences, the opposite aspects, without friction there would be no passion nor attraction...

    I think we could happily call this poem a free sonnet, I like that you closed it with a rhymed (if slant rhymed) couplet. This is a lovely and thoughtful piece of work.

    a kind of cold shill was across my back as i read this, i am in the dark at the moment and that kind of had me looking around, not cause it was scary but i guess that is just how my mind works, keep it flowing and good luck in the contest
