Trees

The wind's ballroom is between my leaves
And the sky peeks down from my top boughs.
The sun's light is filtered by my eaves
And thus spatters the leafy ground.

The serious conference between the squirrels
Takes place where I can give ear,
And all the little sparrows' quarrels
and arguments are settled here.

The young two-leggers climb me for fun
And disturb the ants' march up my spine
And once the sun sets and the day is done
The residents settle here for the night.

The centipedes and moles' whispers
Through my roots I have heard
And to those with claws and whiskers
As I scratching post, I am preferred

And so, as I am slain and taken
And divided up to make many things,
To gain my wisdom, you are mistaken
If you think you can read it in my rings.

Author notes

It was mostly about how all that wisdom and experience can't be gathered just by looking at it. You have to understand.

I like the point of this poem. I have often wondered, especially when in the forest, how much the trees have seen take place. They hold so many secrets.

I must say, I thought "the serious conference of the squirrels" and "the little sparrows' quarrels" were certainly original and interesting descriptions. I don't think most would consider the squirrel serious and I think most would write of the sparrows' songs rather than quarrels. Thank you for the unique take on the contest.

I always thought it was presumptuous of people to assume that squirrels and sparrows only tittered at each other; to them, in their lives, they are disputing serious matters. How could we know that some tragedy, some property dispute is not being discussed? Though, I suppose I'm getting carried away. I'm glad you liked it.

This is very, very good. I would have to say that it is one of my favorites.

It is very deep and well done. It could use a little polish, but nothing serious.

    Blessings,

    C

I tried to not worry about the kinks - because I tend to drive myself crazy - and just focus on the main point. I'm glad you liked it so much.

Thank you. Trees just aren't very inspirational to me, so I'm glad I could put out something worth reading.
