Christmas is Coming

Once each year is plenty, just a tiny botheration,
Relax, take it easy, and enjoy the situation.
You may have to hug, and then kiss your wife's Mother
But  she'll hug you right back, without any bother.

It really is the season for peace, goodwill to men,
It'll be a whole year, before you do this again.
Presents for all, means your bank account is whacked,
You won't get a  refund if you take  presents back.

Your wife sticks her nose in the fridge in your shed
Expecting a turkey, and finds your grog stash instead.
The presents you've been hiding underneath the bed
Have  been quickly opened up, and all instructions read.

When Christmas day is over and everyone has gone
You may be glad of peace and quiet, at home and all alone
Reflect on all the troubles, right around this worrried planet,
Give thanks for all you have; can I get you something, Janet?

Author notes

Wouldn't it be wonderful if the peace and goodwill of Christmas was to be applied the whole year through, in every country.

Commercialisation has spoiled the Christmas spirit for me. You get flooded with ads telling your kids of all the wonderful things there are at the toy shop. Can't we just be friends at Xmas and have fun without all the expense.

Actually i'd like to see something like this on a Xmas card.

You are right. Let it be Christmas all the year! Peace and goodwill each day, forever.
Very nice the way you invite people to live in peace.
    Beautiful poetry.

I have been in all sorts of strife in my life and now that I'm getting closer to the end of it I can see all the silly arguments and things I carried on with were really not necessary. Therefore peace, courtesy and kindness to everyone, all year. Many thanks for your suppportive comments.

Yes, i totally agree with this, Bob. Xmas is a great time for all, but if it were to extend to every day and every place on the planet, that would be a real present for all and something worth celebrating indeed. A beautiful poem with humour thrown into the mix. The only part i have a problem with is the third verse/lines one and two. I could seem to get that to sit correctly. There either seems to be one word too many or it's missing a word. Only my opinion, but all in all, i thought it was superb.

I love getting your comments. You don't miss anything and say so when you find a problem. I like that. I will have a long look at it in the morning and will let you know by IM.
The attitudes shown at Xmas would do wonders for the world if they were applied all year round; peace, friendship, courtesy, kindness etc.

Thank you kind sir, for your comments. The commercialisation of Christmas spoils its impact for many people who are short of "disposable" income. I love the peace and goodwill side of the season.

    Beautiful words !

I can't believe that it's nearly Xmas again Bob It's a shame that the real meaning of Xmas is lost in all the hype of it all. People breaking the budget all in the name of having to give that 'perfect' gift Wouldn't it be wonderful if Xmas was a time for peace and goodwill as I'm sure it's meant to be. I have a friend on this site who's husband has just been diagnosed with a very aggresive cancer and probably won't even see Xmas. Wouldn't it be wonderful if Santa could bring the gift of a cure for such horrible diseases. Well penned Bob

Julie, I think the greatest gift we can all give for absolutely no cost is friendship.
I feel for those like your friend whose husband has an agressive cancer, it would indeed be something if santa could bring them a cure or at least remission. Ilike your comments, you put life into them, a great many thanks.
