The woods

The ancient woods that lie beyond the fence
Where willows wind their roots beneath the stream
Where shadows form a blackness so intense
And even squirrels seem afraid to dream

The oaks and elms group thickly farther in
Where sunshine finds it hard to reach the ground
Where birdsong's stilled before it can begin
And last years leaves are carpeting the ground

'Round clearings there are sycamores and ash
And saplings that take comfort in the sun
Too soon they have to start the skyward dash
Until they do the glade can fill with fun

To walk past woodland trees sets me at ease
I'd love to live in forests such as these

And I would love to as well! Nothing is more beautiful than an ancient forest... except perhaps a waterfall within an ancient forest! :-) A beautiful write, lovely description, very good rhyme and meter, and fantastic flow. All in all, a wonderful piece. Good luck in the contest! Blessed Be.

Interesting piece. I was hoping you would end as you did though I was not sure as you almost seemed to paint a negative or dreary view of the forest, but I am glad to see you would love to be there as I would as well.

Very nice use of the sonnet form too. It is one of my favorites.

    Thanks for entering.

An excellent poem extolling the virtues of trees...to wander through such a wood would be fun
