Grandma’s Vegetable Garden

A gentle rain kisses Lilly upon her face so sweet.
She loves to visit Grandma’s garden because it’s such a treat.
All the birds come singing, then suddenly off they fly,
And puffy rain clouds come floating,
Across the dark grey sky.

Lilly is catching ladybugs, one lands upon her knee.
Grandma’s watering the garden; she can’t just let it be.
The tomatoes are climbing up the trellis high,
And puffy rain clouds come floating,
Across the dark grey sky.

An earthworm comes crawling from under his compost pile.
His squiggles and his wiggles sure make Lilly smile.
Grandma sees him squirming and wants him to safely pass on by,
And puffy rain clouds come floating,
Across the dark grey sky.

Lilly gets the garden rake and smoothes the good dark dirt.
Grandma has some pumpkin seeds tucked in the pocket of her shirt.
The squash is growing nicely along the fence so high,
And puffy rain clouds come floating,
Across the dark grey sky.

Grandma makes a scarecrow to shoo away the crows.
Lilly takes the water can and sprinkles up and down the rows.
The scarecrow does his job and away the black crows fly.
And puffy rain clouds come floating,
Across the dark grey sky.

Lilly puts on her garden gloves and helps pull all the weeds.
Grandma tells her, “Careful, watch for sprouting seeds!”
She can pull the carrots because they’re ripe, oh my.
And puffy rain clouds come floating,
Across the dark grey sky.

That dark cloud has burst and inside the house they run.
What else could they do in the garden when the rain has just begun?
Everything can grow now; we’ll not have to wonder why.
When puffy rain clouds come floating,
Across the dark grey sky.

A moonbeam kisses Lilly upon her face so sweet.
She loves to visit Grandma’s garden because it’s such a treat.
The sun has set this evening on another dark grey sky,
And fluffy dreams come floating,
I never question why.

  • This poem has touched me in the deepest parts of my heart.
I am an avid gardener and, I spent much of my time doing this with my grandkids. However since Katrina I no longer live near them so we can't get into the dirt together as often as we'd like. I nicknamed my grandson "Caterpillar Hunter" for while we worked the garden I gave him a soft cotton glove to remove the little creatures without squishing them. At summer's end last year I gathered seeds for my granddaughters to start their own gardens this spring. You poem is happy and sweet and shows the love of the earth and the lessons we teach them while doing something we love. I'm sure your granddaughter will love this series you're doing for her. Reading it makes me want to speed up the clock so school will hurry up and end so I'll have my babies with me in Grandmother's garden. Again, you've really written a beautiful poem. I'm glad I had the chance to read it. You shouldn't change a thing about the way it is written. I look forward to reading your others in the series.
