With Bell Book and Candle

In full view, beneath silvery moonlight

Dancing around caldron and fire ablaze,

Glowing embers escape into the night

Whilst voices work into a cackled craze!

Leaping, laughing and spinning all about

Three witches in tenebrous eve air,

Flailing pale arms, they recite with a shout

Incantations that would raise a cat’s hair!

Seething, writhing, fervent flames be rising!

Like tongues of serpents licking at dark sky,

Herbs, hops and many a thing comprising

A potion that will keep them young and spry.

And as sun does rise, over misty dells

Sleepy mystical minds, contemplate spells.

Author notes

I took this in a different direction as I understand that the "Book of Shadows" is a Wicca document.

"Wow! !!!Tenebrous, it's a long time since I've heard that word! You have quite a colorful vocabulary! "Cackled craze". I love your magnificent use of alliteration! "leaping, laughing" I love the phrase "Flailing pale arms". Line 9 is absolutely wonderful!

The Book of Shadows is actually like a journal, though it does hold religious texts in the religion of Wicca, it also holds certain other non pagan witchcraft traditions. So it's like a weird bible kind of.. lol. But this was really beautiful dad. something that is dark but mystical as well.. Wonderfully written good luck in the contest.

Book of Shadows...hm, I'm not much on the Wiccan and Satanic and whatnot, but I know enough, I suppose. A good write all around as usual:

Flailing pale arms, they recite with a shout

Incantations that would raise a cat’s hair!

I have two cats, so I can appreciate!

A certain vitality in visuals spring forth in reading this fine piece. And I like it! One can envision the croons casting spells in the night around a fire. Nice work.

This remids me more of Macbeth...Double, bubble boil and trouble.. This is definatly a vastly different aproach, and yet the title reads like the opening line of the poem. The lines flowed quite easily as I read it. A nice job here.
