Regrets

You've been drinking again
more than I like
and more than you can handle.

Each time you pick up
that glass
we grow further and
further apart.

Sometimes,
when you've had to much to drink
you raise your hand to me.
It doesn't take much
to set you off.

Maybe dinner is late,
or no more booze in the house,
or even you want sex
and I don't.

Doesn't matter what it is
the booze takes all
thoughts of love
out of the equation
and it takes control
and we lose.

I have asked
and asked for you to quit
this drinking
but it seems to have more control
over you
than you have over it.
And our love
it seems to come last.

Now I am through asking.
I won't put up with the hitting,
the drinking,
and everything else
that you've done.

We are over!

    Strong and intense, I loved this! and I can so relate! though my problem isn't the hitting or the drinking, but everything else that isn't happening.. Like happiness... Thank you very much for sharing. Best of luck in the contest.

    Sorry - you seem to have misunderstood the requirements of my competition - it was for poems about Poetry and/or poets. I wish you luck with this poem, elsewhere - but as far as the "Celebrating poetry and poets" competition is concerned, I do have to say "No".

    Great emotion and images in this - sad. It's such a common situation, it seems - too many drink too much and can't handle it, and shouldn't be trying to!

    Its sad but true.. how drink can cause so much heart ache to the loved ones who sit and watch..
    Only they can change
    Any many relationships end due to hitting that bottle
