One foot out the door and my eyes begin to

not with tears but from the thickness of the air
I can hear the

carried by the wind
I can feel the embers brushing up against my skin
painfully aware of

filling lungs with every breath
nose starting to sting
mind wandering- how many deaths?
how many homes gone up in smoke
just memories left behind
how many only grateful
that there's family to find
winds surging with little pause
reaching out their wispy claws
coaxing flames from within trees
sparking with uncanny ease
brave souls endure hellish heat
trying to save homes and lives
surging water has success but
winds strike back like flying knives
As soon as one flame is out
one sparks elsewhere, once more
The screaming reaches distant ears
and grayish embers dust the floor.
Author notes
In memory of those fighting the fires and who lost their lives to the fires. God bless your souls, and I hope the fires are out soon. It's also been extremely smoky and smoggy here, hard to breathe unless you're in the house.
