Was die Welt ist

Die Welt ist ein Skulpturenpark
durch den wir alle gehn
Wir sehn uns an, bewundern uns
erstarren, bleiben stehn.

Die Welt ist auch ein Treppenhaus
durch das wir alle rufen
Wir wolln nach oben, hoch hinaus
und werden dort zu Stufen.

Die Welt ist ein Gemälde
und alles schon zu sehen.
Es geht darum, wohin wir schaun
um Fakten zu verstehen.

Die Welt ist eine Scheibe
Sie trübt sich wenn wir klopfen.
Sie weist uns stets aufs Neue ab
und wir sind die Tropfen.

I struggled with this... I took a few quarters of German ages ago and I used http://dict.tu-chemnitz.de/ to try to muddle through the rest, but an American translation by you would go a long way toward clarity! The world is like a sculpture park, a staircase, a picture, and a ? plate ? disk ?

It sounds cool when read with as good of a Germanic accent as I can muster, hence 3 stickmen!

Thank you Jim for your opinion and the chores you took

... after all, my mother language is not so easy for strangers! And I rate you among my personal top three poets on AP, so I appreciate your words the more. The translation will have to wait a little (wednesday that is, then my final exams are done). But to give you a rough guideline: The world is "a sculpture park, a staircase, a picture" as you stated and, well, very punny, a disk and it's the same word as window pane.More transducational hints are to follow. All the best, Götz
