Honey Cake

It was an early morning bright,
So lovely in the sun;
Miss Teddy thought, "I shall go out,
To get my nails redone.”
She took up her big basket and
She put on her pink hood;
She patted Baby on the head,
And said; “Now you be good!

“I’ll only be away ‘til noon,
So you stay right away
From honey cake on the table
That I baked yesterday!”
She kissed Baby upon the head,
As merry as could be;
She looked forward to that nice cake,
She’d have it for her tea.

Baby did watch her wistfully
And sat down on the floor;
The scent of warm, sweet honey cake
Wafted through open door.
He sighed and groaned and his tummy
Did groan in loud reply;
Even his little dolly gave
A little yearning cry.

Honey cake with lavender tea,
Honey cake soft and hot;
Honey cake, full of honey sweet;
Tummy is in a knot!
Honey cake so golden and warm,
Honey cake in a bite;
Honey cake, berries and fresh cream,
He’d never win this fight!

His tiny tummy burst right then,
It roared like lion loud;
His tummy ruled his little head,
He heard the cheering crowd!
And when at last the clock struck noon,
Miss Teddy homeward came,
Baby was nowhere to be seen,
He’d run off in his shame.

She saw that honey cake was gone,
As gone as gone can be;
That Baby was not to be seen,
By George, he’d be sorry!

Yet there was still one last surprise:
She found a single crumb;
And there was Baby’s little note:
“Mummy, I left you some!”
