Hey, Little Stripers

We got this little kitty about 6 months back.
She was the nicest little kitty ‘til she learned to attack.
Now little kitty is a ninja always stalking our feet.
This little kitty is a warrior and hard to defeat.
She’s quite a nasty little thing. Look how she’s messed up our hands,
And always getting into trouble any way that she can.
If you give her a toy she’d rather play with the wrapper.
We even give her cool, clean water still she drinks from the crapper.
So hard to hold or show affection, ‘cause she just doesn’t care.
She’d rather bite off all your toes or claw out all of your hair.
She loves to scratch up all the chairs and jump all over the couch,
Or else she’s knocking things off shelves and running mad through the house.
A mighty bundle full of energy but rarely amused,
No joke, this kitty will attack you if you breath or you move.
Made to make trouble, begin battles, she is sly like a viper.
She really ought to be locked up.  Maybe that why we call her Stripers.

Hey, little Stripers, what is with all the fight?
Little bitty kitty wants to bite, bite, bite.

Where are you hiding now? Are you still stalking me?
Under the couch somewhere? Maybe. Quite possibly.
Ears laid way back, with one-track mind and only thinking one thought,
Ready to pounce and stick your claws in me with all that you’ve got,
You’re probably watching with your eyes on me from across the room.
You’re concentrating, contemplating on attacking me soon.
You’re not invisible kitty.  I’m going to get to you first.
Come out, come out, little kitty, before things get any worse.
I’ve seen the spaces you hide and know the places you’ve been.
So now you’d better get wise and then you’d better give in.
Don’t try to sneak up on me this time, ‘cause I’m really prepared.
I’ve got some tricks up my sleeve and, no, I’m not really scared.
Sometimes I think I hear you jingling, sneaking under the bed,
But now I know you’re only making noise to mess with my head.
So you can stalk me all you want to, but I won’t be your prey.
You think you're gonna get me first, but, Stripers, not today.

Hey, little Stripers, what is with all the fight?
Little bitty kitty want to bite, bite, bite.

I’ve got her cornered here, and now she’s mine,
And there’s no way I’m going to let her get away this time.
I’ll snatch her up so fast and I will win.
And then I’ll…awww, man!  She’s asleep in the bin.
What’s with this cat? I just don’t get her and I’m so confused.
We made a bed for her, pillows and all, that’s never been used.
With every hour she’s awake she’s always up for a fight,
And then the next minute, ‘boom’, asleep, and out like a light.
Why did I let this little creature come into our life?
She never cuddles, only struggles, squirms or tries to make strife.
We’re quite afraid to leave this cat to roam at home all alone.
This kitty’s tendency is to destroy each thing that we own.
Look at her now though.  She’s so sweet, and maybe not all that bad.
Perhaps with time she’ll turn out to be the best cat that we’ve had.
You see there’s one thing I neglected- nearly forgot to mention:
All this fighting’s just another way to get some attention.

Hey, little Stripers, what is with all the fight?
Little bitty kitty want to bite, bite, bite.

Author notes

Stripers looked and behaved almost identically to Sparta, such that my daughters and I were inspired to adapt Cory William's "The Mean Kitty Song" to match the ideosyncracies of her own behavior in our home. This version is a tribute to Cory's original Genius, and Stripers -- a fine, but not fully understood cat, who was struck from this plane just last August on an unfamiliar road.

A delightful read. Having known and loved kitties of all stripe myself, enjoyed and understood completely.

Oh yeah, I don't think Corey's Kitty quite lives up to the lyrics like Stripers did! Man, we sure had fun with his song though... Sparta's Legacy lives on!
