Someone Said

The message you sent
Engraved onto my soul
Circled with neon highlighter
Thumbtacked on the map
You made of my heart
You folded it, you bent it
Till it was pocket material
Too light to be taken for dark
Made of foolish sunshine, not this
Black hole

Someone said
We’d all grow up to 1984
But I see a way to end the war
One and one and one and one
Don’t equal four
They’re all individual
Once you understand this
We can surpass this
This barrier

And you said you were trying
To scale this crumbling mountain
But you stopped at the fountain
Of youth where you drank
Ambrosial waters, gluttonous, golden
Taken for granted by all they survive
Wanted for life but their bodies stank
Of formaldehyde
This retrocede
Inside this residence
I built it of bad intentions
I had no intention of repentance

Someone said
We’d all grow up to 1984
But I see a way to end the war
One and one and one and one
Don’t equal four
They’re all individual
Once you understand this
We can surpass this
This barrier

And you deigned a future
Where you would be King
Without a Queen
To get in your way
Walking past wandering tourists
Just had my life blown to bits
By the suburban leafcutters
Soccer mothers
They’re vampires in disguise
Milking cash cow guardians
To mix water with gold
No-one ever taught them that lesson
Water with gold is fire
But I can’t do more than necessary
To avoid the Almighty’s ire.

Author notes

Once someone understands what others have lost on their way up, they themselves can begin to try and discover what they themselves have.

    Another good poem!

I just can't see the connection to the prompt. Very abstract and colorful, but what is its message?

The message is that once a person sheds their misconceptions of something, they can gain a greater understanding and further implement change. Of course, that road is often fraught with confusion, as the poem illustrates with the often abrupt change in subject material. It's less about the change itself than the morning after the change, in which one has to come to terms with their newfound knowledge.
