Magnet

You are a blip
On this ship’s satellite
You are a star
Burning through the night
You are a voice
On the late-night radio
You are a sword
Thrown into the ring when I’ve given up the fight
And I know

You’re a magnet
Red and blue
What comes off of me
Sticks to you
When I feel polarized
I know my ground is in your eyes

I used to dress up those days
In rubies and sapphires and gold
I used to believe there was a reprieve
Between what I knew and what I was told
But now I know
You can’t let the sparkle show

Still you’re a magnet
Red and blue
What comes off of me
Sticks to you
When I feel polarized
I know my ground is in your eyes

I kept you in my trophy case
Polished, patterned, clean
I only kept the negatives
Everything else I threw away
Our tale’s one told in black and white
On the Technicolor screen

Still you’re a magnet
Red and blue
What comes off of me
Sticks to you
When I feel polarized
I know my ground is in your eyes

It’s gonna get
It’s gonna get
It’s gonna get charged

It’s gonna get
It’s gonna get
It’s gonna get charged

Because you’re a magnet
Red and blue
What comes off of me
Sticks to you
When I feel polarized
I know my ground was in those eyes
But now I hear the thunder’s roar
And I know that slate has been wiped
For now

Author notes

"She pulls your eyes out with a face like a magnet"...
(Elvis Costello)

What better way to respond to a song than with a song? While my response suggests that the line/song's subject has more of an ability to calm than indicated, it still hints at the power of the titular object and how any object can be thrown away.
