Then drop their gaze to the ground, as we move on by.
They think, by looking, that they know us deep within
Simply by judgement of the colour of our skin.
Our hearts, our souls, frienship, does not matter,
When they reach out - our closeness to shatter,
To them, he has 'stolen' me, and I am wrong to 'take'
One of 'theirs' - it's my greatest mistake.
Though I cherished our laughter, and enjoyed our time,
They see our date only as the world's biggest crime.
When their greedy eyes see his hand and mine,
Together, holding on, closely entwined,
They feel justified in launching a verbal attack.
Just because I am white - and he is black.
Author notes
I went on a date last night, and, was the receiver of some filthy looks just because of the colours of our skin. It upset me more than I cared to admit to him.

People are so judgemental, as if they have the right to be. Many of the people throwing the filthy looks are ignorant. They don't know that love and affection goes deeper than skin color or gender. I think of it as their loss though
This is a really good write. Keep writing!!

Wow. We are all human, we just have differences that make us unique; skin color, talents, features... the list goes on and on. As humans we can look beyond the surface and find the person beneath, but the sad part is that not everyone does. There are those who are narrowminded and still stuck on stereotypes.
This is a wonderfully written piece. I can feel the hurt and pain. It flows word for word and the rhyming is well done.

You share a very painful experience here. How sad it is that so many do not get that we are all one race...human...with many varieties of colors and features and giftings!
I see this write as being a very powerful insight as to what it feels like to be in your situation.

Profound piece...
It details the problems created by small, narrow minded people who can't see beyond the superficial... Judged on exterior appearence rather than for the person who inhabits the body...
As a race, humanity still has a long way to go, but they're getting there slowly, even just 30 yrs ago, the same scenerio would have ended a lot worse...
I realise thats probably very little comfort to you, but humanity must grow in its own time, they won't change overnight...
A fantastic piece that moved me in its power & profound truth...
Keep up the good work...
Well done!!!

This poem is due a trophy from somebody who appreciates good poetry and an important, valuable message.

I know what you mean. Not directly by colour but as I am partially sighted, I am often treated different and it's not fair. Why should our skin colour matter, love is love in any respect sex, colour and religion is nothing when someone is special to you... they just are.

it does sicken me to my stomach when people are treated differently because they are not 'perfect' - i was often bullied while growing up because i am taller than many girls yet now, those girls who are older, envy me my height but at a time, it was as cause for their fun, while i was the victim. i'm sorry that people treat you differently, it's an unfair world at the best of times

Great write, courageous and authentic
Many can relate to this, myself included. Don't let the bastards wear you down. You have each other, that's what matters, not what they think they know. Prejudice hurts everyone. Everyone.

the world is a cruel place at hte best of times - and it's often hard to know how you could even attempt to change it .... people seem to get worse, not better

Very nice poem and your anger is well justified and flows through.

Best wishes in the contests.

wow that's so sad that people cannot accept that you can care for or even love someone who is different from you, isn't that the point of the feeling? you have captured the unique sadness from that situation perfectly, best of luck in the contest

i am still in contact with him, and, I've decided, to hell with anyone who gets on my case about him, for he is a lovely guy, and why shouldn't we spend time together!

It's a terrible time that we live in Peter. Yes, I know that some black people pull the 'you picking on me 'cause i'm black' card - and this causes trouble for the majority who don't. It's not like they're a different race to us - just a different colour, and makes me so angry & upset when people try to differenciate for that reason alone! Thank you for your comment

That is so rude.
I don't understand why people do that. Things like that just piss me off. I'm white and some of my best friends are black.
The poem itself is great. I like they rhyming. Everything seemed to fit perfectly. I can tell that you were very hurt by the way that people looked at you and what they said. Very emotional poem.

I don't get it either Ryan!
I mean, this was a date - not a relationship as I'm moving away from England in a couple weeks, but - it was just like they looked like the 'knew' us - and literally, thought that because i was white, I shouldn't "take" one of their men - it was ridiculous, but the first time that i've been subjected to a personal racial attack ...

Well done. This piece is beautiful in every single way. Forget about the people and forget about the things they say. As long as your happy! You have a great talent for writing! Great poem!

I hear you I really do
Adults and in their way they were raised see not the love between people as they should they were taught hate of colors and it is so sad for not all hate just some that think not for themselves but through what others told them to think . I was friends will all races as I was growing up and we had such wonderful great times together . The conflict today is from the old ways and it is sad people have to display such actions to their children today . But it will take both sides to heal and stop this racism for children in the years to come will be biracial and in being so I have found even today are shunned for they are not of one race .Little children going through what you went through imagine how hurt they are every day of their life for the public can be as cruel as a grade school class . It is a shame we as a people cant thrive and love and know if their was such a thing as racism why are their children falling in love with one another doesnt anyone see this and know
its time to lay down the hurtful words and stares and know if we just gave it a chance love could be found within all races as a people and no one group is better than another we are people who could love one another and be happy .
