Friends Can't Be Trusted

I lost my best friend from high school
when disaster suddenly struck,
I trusted some from the internet
and they quickly destroyed my luck.

I put trust in a false friend
that I thought I knew on-line,
I told him about my best friend
and I thought everything was fine.

Even though we had already fought
and I had said goodbye,
my best friend from back then
had made me want to cry.

I was in an abusive marriage
and she didn't seem to care,
I tried to turn to her for help
but she was never there.

I told many stories over the internet
about my past best friend,
the one I knew from high school,
after our friendship came to an end.

My internet friends contacted her
about what I'd said behind her back,
they messed with my words
and turned it into an attack.

She was really angry with me
and I was already upset with her,
it turned into a worse situation
where anger was then astir.

More people got involved
and bad words were said about me,
I was the one that was blamed
and it set my abuser free.

I was separated and divorced
the anger and hate didn't dissolve,
It's been a few years now
and I have left everybody involved.

I'm still followed by my internet foes
they will not leave me alone,
to this day they are still there
and everything about me is known.

The internet can be dangerous
when we think we know one well,
they are not who they seem to be,
there is really no way to tell.

My past best friend caused a problem
that will never go away,
just because of some personal words
that she just had to say.

The situation was not my fault,
I was wrong to put trust in another,
they were not really my friends,
they even lied to each other.

Author notes

I hope that my poem is understandable. The situation was just a big mess and I am still stuck with the problem to this day. I tried to get the police involved but I have no proof that my past internet friends are following me with spyware. They were never really friends in the first place.

wow that is a really harsh lesson to have to be learned, what a sad story, i think that a lot of people need to read this to make them realise that not all is at it seems, you can be anyone online but that doesn't make you real, best of luck in the contest

I have one thing to say .... <-- THAT!

What a horrible, despicable situation you found yourself in, and I can identify only too well because a good friend of mine, who I only know from the internet, thought she found her true love online - and on a SIM game [an animal themed one] - they 'dated' for two years, talked on the phone, shared everything - and then 'he' stopped contacting her for six months because he had to go to his uncle's farm because living with his mom was unbearable -

And then, six months after he left, she got an email from a woman she didn't know, and this woman said that her partner had just died of cancer - and that it was only when she found her partner's email passwords, that she went into them to close them down / email her internet friends. This woman [they were lesbians] had been stringing along four girls - each of whom thought they were dating an 18 year old guy. The woman was a butch lesbian, with a deep voice which passed for a guy of 18 - and she'd told each of them a different story. Thsi was proved when the woman still living sent the URL of the picture that the guy had used to portray himsefl ; it was a hockey player!

So anyway, this broke my friend's heart - her life- her trust - everything ... so i know, from an outsiders view, just how .. unbelievable it seems that someone would spend so much time pretending they're thre for you, and taht they care - and in the end, you get stabbed in the back. And - it happened to me, though in a lesser state, and i prefer not to think about that- but just - *hugs* for all the sh*t they put you through....

there are ways to stop them from 'following' you online - ie get a new phone line and change your IP address, get new user names on all forums / messengers, don't access your old accounts anymore etc etc.

I hear you I really do

This enternet stuff has destroyed so many lives and so often people do these things to others thinking it is in all fun and games yet it crushes trust and causes families to break up . I feel for you I really do and I hope you can find friends outside of the net and tell your new friends what has come about and if they are to be a friend they will stay and not listen to the destructive gossip running about . I am so sorry you lost your best friend I so know what that feels like and hope soon you can find another that can be true and honest with you .Dont you ever give up trying and message me anytime for I speak from my heart and I hate gossip and wont take what others say to be fact when they talk about another on the sight .I follow my own heart on who I am friends with on here
