Whispers in the Dark

As I lay here in my loneliness,
with the darkness all around,
I listen to the ringing.
It’s become a friendly sound.

A click and a recording,
a menu for my dreams,
as I select a number
and wait forever, so it seems.

A breathless “Hello Lover”
and I’m transported from this place.
I only need to hear her voice,
she doesn’t need a face.

Our words entwine intimately
like whispers in the dark.
I taste the sweetness of her lips,
as on love’s journey I embark.

I feel her hands touch gently
as our passions build.
I cry out in excitement;
my pleasure’s needs fulfilled.

Mumbled words of thanks
as I hang up the phone.
Another night, another call,
and, for a while, I’m not alone.

Far away, she hangs up too.
She’s plain and has no style
but she’s been someone’s fantasy
if only for a while…

and that’s enough to make her smile.
