Once Upon a Turtle Dove

Oh feathered breast so warm, so dear,
For whom does your heart sing?
That soft melody, so tender, clear,
And shining does it ring!

Hear me now, a soft repeat,
Oh tender blossom of the air!
Sing me a tune so saintly sweet,
Delicate as prayer!

Alas your notes, that song alone,
Sustain my beating need!
And with you now my heart has flown
For sake of being free!

Oh quiet ballad! Lullaby!
So sagely, sacred, rare!
Your music drifts from sky to sky,
And none other may compare!

Oh feathered breast, oh beating heart,
Bless’ed be thy love!
And never shall I let thee part,
My darling turtle dove!
