Poetry -- What's That? Part 5

            Free Verse

I won't say a lot here as I am one of those traditional poets who like rhyme and rhythm.

Free verse has no set rules, you, the author make your own rules.  Wow, says I, I can write anything and as long as it's in short lines, I can call it free Verse and be a poet.  Wrong!
There are no set rules, True; you make your own rules, True;    but there is a catch:-
You have to stick to the rules you have made! Not so easy if you want to be a poet. My own research has shown me that there only two rules that apply to all types of poetry...
It must flow from the page and, it must read like poetry.

Since writing is an art form, and is of necessity subjective, and cannot really be defined, I will leave this page right here. I hope the foregoing will gave an idea of what poetry is and help you along you journey as a writer of poetry.

Just for interest sake I offer you two items on Storywrite to read, one is a conceit [I think]
the other a free verse poem. Both have identical wording, both are called the Rabbit Trap.  Here are the links:

Hi David, many thanks for you support. I was asked by a friend who did not understand the techie bits of meter and such, to explain simply how to start with the rhymimg and such. I hoped it would be a help to the younger ones on site to get started. Seems it has. I am pleased with the responses.

A great many thanks to you Mercedes, for your comments on this series. The whole idea was to have something basic, purely as a starter. There are many avenues available to go on to higher levels of learninng in poetry as in the other forms of writing. Few have starter kits.

I really like this series Bob. And you tell it like it is.
My own writing has been in two parts basically. I started off as rhyming writer, then I had a long break from poetry, now I write free verse mainly. Maybe I got lazy! Excellent work Bob!

I wrote it out as a request from someone on site. I still can't write free verse worth a damn myself. But I shall learn in time. I have started a series of short stories on Storywrite and am finding it hard to conform to the accepted methods. I have one near ready written in my own yarn teller style. See what happens.
Many thanks for your supportive comments. Hope somebody get a benefit from the series.

This part was really good, Bob. Allowing people to realize that poetry can be in any form, as long as it still has flow as a poem. You were right in leaving this part short and sweet. Basically, free verse is a real invitation to divert from the rhyme and test other waters. I only have a few of these types of poems. It is sometimes difficult to set them out, unless of course you are good at it. I'm not that much. You also chose a very good piece to use as an example.

The Rabbit Trap is an amazing write by Lis. There are now three versions of it, two with identical wording and the other turns it into something else altogether with another piece added. i have not been able to write Free Verse that I like at all, so I have nothing on site of that type. I congratulate on her skills with the Rabbit Trap.
