is a cross of choice,
flowing over fathomless fires
that burn forever.
Spiritual souls
travel over perilous pathways,
many times meeting themselves
almost back where they started.
Faltering faith
creates mountains of misery,
tormented by temptations
many give up,
and fall by the wayside.
Those who endure
encounter evil at every turn,
constantly clashing
they cling to their convictions,
in steadfast commitment.
From the beginning of time,
light spoke
and uncovered the darkness.

Awesome idea of ascension laid out here, excellent word choice, smooth reading and conscious metaphors roll seamlessly together, I appreciate the fact that you chose to make this free verse. Riddle me this, why do people say whole stanzas in a comment as this addendum to the message is doing, it seems to only articially add to the girth of the comment, am I the only one that that pisses them off, Im all for comments and criticism, but what the crap? EndRant. Your ending was incredible as it tied together this impossible impasse that the vigilant needed to overcome to an awesome reality they might discover if they could champion their own ways, by no means easy but worth every drop of ambosial paradise they could drink once escaped from the wanton flames that tormented them through life. You seem to be a christian person by your choice of themes, if thats the case or really if not, I might suggest 'screw tape letters' --cs lewis to you, its absolutely fantastic and this poem could almost be a reply to that book, as its all about temptations coming at you from every angle for what seems to be an eternity. Im done yammering, best of luck in the contest.

Thank you 'Deindichter' for reading and for such a wonderful comment! I am pleased you enjoyed this.
I think people pick out certain verses or wording that resonates with them - I know I am guilty of that sometimes, also....lol....it doesn't bother me as I know that way that something of what I wrote was relatable and 'touched' someone.
I am writing down that book - it's not something I've read, at least I don't think so (I read about 20 books a week, all topics, on a good week).....my father was a minister - me.....I'm beginning to think I am much more 'spiritual' than 'religious'.....
thank you again, so much, for such a lovely comment.
best wishes to you

Today, I felt like reading a spiritual poem. I don't know how spiritual a person I am but I wanted very much to consider your words. Each verse inspired a thought or feeling but I won't comment on each.
Your closing lines were perfect for me. I did wonder about verse two and why spiritual souls should wander in circles. (That is not a complaint about the poem but just me wondering about life)
Let me wonder about these things on my own time though eh! You included a perfect picture to accompany your poem and your words have made me think about my own as yet limited experiences. Glad I stopped by. You are a thoughtful writer. Jane

Thank you so much 'Justjane' for stopping by - I'm glad you found this interesting.
I am not a 'religious' person (even though my dad was a minister!), but I do feel I am a spiritual person.
Most people wander around in circles - like the proverbial chicken with its head cut off....lolol....and even when I write stuff "I" don't understand, I don't argue with my 'muse' - I'm afraid she'll run off on vacation and shut off the cell phone!...
....plus then she gives me 'stupid voices' - although I have to admit, I enjoy my humor writes!
again, thanks

Thanks for the thought aboomer. I think I do confuse religion and spirituality quite often. Something important I will try to remember

So true this is and in this generation untaught of love for ones self and for others has caused so much pain for witrhout care their is no faith .But to be shown what faith is by carying yourelf true for others to feel your love and care for those around you this is so faith in action and its contageous if we would stand with this faith and love never fall for we so know theres no other way to live
