Red-faced man in rustic garb
Yelling, grey curls on head and chin
quiver; I will call him Captain Ahab.
The women singing hymns
behind him look like the cast of
Little House on the Prairie.
“God is your creator!”
“Man is in His image!”
“I didn’t come from no monkey!”
I think Fundies refuse evolution
‘cause it holds we grew
from silly creatures such as apes
(not monkeys).
Perhaps they’d subscribe if we came
from something more majestic
than what they see as a devolved human.
If we dropped from the sky in an eagle’s egg,
or were sired
to roar by the lazy lion.
Maybe they’d even prefer
suckling of the wolf,
like Romulus and Remus.
There are worse creatures to have
hanging in your family tree than clever
chimps, you know.
The snake is a father they’d be certain of
Disowning,
though slippery semen appear its close kin.
And surely, such a race as ours
could never have risen from the same soup
as rats, possums, and wallowing swine.
Isn’t it interesting how fervent
is the stubbornness of Fundamentalists
yet they insist
they have nothing in common
with asses?
