to the city dump, today,
reminiscent of life and things changing.
Once blue skies now hazy gray.
Another place that isn't the same
When I was a kid it was dirt roads and sage brush,
country roads are now eight lane.
Back then two cars, at the pump, was a rush.
Gas station with one pump, in town at night.
riding around in ole Lynch's four door 1954 ford,
was the only one town light
teenagers, getting high, talking bout the Lord.
Muffler came off one night, we went to the station
Their was four of us in the car, it was cool man,
he raised the car up on the lift, we weren't paying attention
we all opened our door and got out, fell on our can.
We all laughed so dang hard, thought we'd never stop.
Back when we were young, country roads and bare feet
those times, in your memory, always float to the top
seemed like right under us, dirt road turned to asphalt city street.
Then there was Viet-nam and came the draft
plucked from the streets by drawing numbers
to see who they would teach an old craft
for a war we were to encumber.
Two weeks before he was due to come home
Lynch was killed by a booby trapped trash can,
fella we all knew as, "Little Pack," shot himself, alone.
Gerry beat the draft, Marks lost a leg, I made it back and so did Dan.
Allot of living has been done since then passed
some great years in northern California
Guess I never really got a grip on anything that ever last
But what's been born in ya, is born in ya.
I remember the white pillow patch clouds and deep blue,
when love, peace, spiritual enlightenment was in the third eye.
But I can today see what changed, back then it was all new
now it's city dump, amidst surrounding cities hazy gray sky,
Oh yeah, today I can look back see where i've gone,
perhaps see the way things have been
and therefore see allot of what was right or wrong
everyone has a country road, where they go again.

I love this!
Such an outpouring of memories and emotion...but the ending made me cry....So perfect ...
"Oh yeah, today I can look back see where i've gone,
perhaps see the way things have been
and therefore see allot of what was right or wrong
everyone has a country road, where they go again."
Sigh....Now I have a lump in my throat
TY for entering this touching piece!!!

A recollection of thoughts and reminiscing like you were conversing with us as we read. Time always has us wishing we things may have gone differently, things we would change and others we would never change! Our faith weaves itself through the fibres of our being during the years intermittently. The different phases of our lives, our highs and lows we can look back and say we perhaps learned from them.. You have blended all in a lovely work of feeling, rhyme and flowing emotions...A splendid work of your recollecting. Your heart is in all of this scribing, dear brother..A cherished write by we who know you!I wish you well in the contest!

A good introduction to this poem you take us all to the local tip and the cast off we need to dump from our life....we all have the clutter of things we collect and hold onto when in reality we should have removed them from our life. Then hindsight is a beautiful thing and when we look back in a reflected light would we make the same decision ...... go back knowing what we know now....the age of wisdom turns the pages and the young need to learn by their own mistakes. Some deep thoughts you present for your readers to linger and ponder over. A new dawn a new beginning and tomorrow is the first day for the rest of our lives as it awaits the discovery of the unknow adventure called life. Very nicely said. Good luck in the contest.

Oh I remember walking bare footed on the dirt roads. Oh yes getting high and talking about the Lord. LOL Gee you admit a lot of things in your poem but it is beautiful. You have a lot of good memories and they are beautiful. I love the imagery in your poem and in flowed so well. It had some humor in it too. We all have a story don't we but David you have one damn good one...LOL Best wishes in the contest. You should do well!!
Wishing You Many Blessings
Much Love
