We all know of copyright
Each author owns his work
But what of the renegade
Who has a fateful quirk?
He steals from the author
Changes naught but the name
Claims he is now the author
It truly is a shame.
But it does employ the lawyer
Who likes to specialise
He can jump right on the renegade
Give him a big surprise,
Drag him out in public,
Muck up his private life,
Humiliate the bugger
Before his lovely wife
Then the court may well award
The lawyer all his fees
Enough to drag the renegade
Right down on his knees.
Be kind to every writer
You may be one yourself
I may want to buy your book
And put it on my shelf.

Thou shall not steal!
There it's written plain as day.
No need to say it any other way.
To steal another's work.
Makes a man a terrible jerk.
God in heaven sees it all.
To steal is to make us small.

You put it so simply Bob, yet it is so true. Unfortunately our propensity to want the proverbial dollar causes all sorts of unnecessary problems.

This is just perfect. Wouldn't it be great if those morons didn't steal other peoples work. I hope it can't be done here! Yes, lawyers would make a great killing, and do, don't they. Love the whole write as it is. This type of poem seems to get the reader to race on through to the end. If the verses were seperated, it would give it a different affect and slow it down. With this piece, it sits very well.

One thing for sure, youknow you have written a good piece when someone wants to acquire ownership of it. It is still a damn shame that writers must beware all the time of copyright theft. Many thanks for you comprehensive comments.

Very nice! A well written piece indeed. Yes, and the lawyers do end up with all the money. Love the ending.

I had a concern about this sort of thing happening on another site and wrote this one for that site in particular after taking most of my stuff off. I posted it here as a sort of warning as to what can happen sometimes. I personally get a lot of satisfaction out of the writing and can see no real reason to "borrow" anyone else's work. Many thanks for your compliments and who knows, the last two lines may apply to any of us.

Thanks for sharing about this topic...Hope none of us are victims to this travesty on us writers and poets...You bring out a truth at the end that hits the nail on the head. Hope it deters the temptation...

Sadly I have seen it happen. It's a shame really. I can never figure out why anyone would, I get satisfaction from my writing, there would be none from taking someone else's work. Many thanks for your comment and thoughts.

Yep! All very true Bob. Great poem.

It would be lovely to think that the world held only honest people. Fortunately the honest ones are in the great majority. Thanks my friend, keep writing regardless.

I guess to want to put your name to someones elses's work would be a backhanded type of compliment in a way. I mean you wouldn't want to put your name to something you didn't consider well written. Nevertheless it is theft and something far too easy to steal and I hope it doesn't happen to any of us...alby

I get a lot of satisfaction from my creative writing and I'm sure you do, too. Where is the satisfaction from taking someone else's work. I know it happens when there is a chnace to make a dollar from the theft, and I think it's a great shame. I think we all enjoy our writing, good or bad, and are quietly proud of our acomplishment. We should always be given recognition as authors. Many thanks for your thoughts and applause.

Bob
I guess it can and does happen. But why? I get satisfaction out of any write being mine. Good or bad. But wise words penned here Robert. As always well penned.

Ah Bob, I don't know. I am prou of my work whether it is considered good or not. There is a sense of achievement that comes with it. Why bother taking somenoe else's work. there is no achievement in that. Many thanks my friend.
