Lie to a Child

God will hear your prayers,
they told her every night,
And she was always hopeful,
that maybe they were right.

They told her how God loved her,
that He would ease her fears,
and she believed these lies,
most of her childhood years.

There were things she knew for certain,
she had caused a lot of pain.
Each day she bore the proof,
with the bruises and the shame.

Confused and full of guilt-
too tired now to try-
the little girl began to pray
that God would let her die.

It was not a prayer of pity,
but instead a prayer of hope.
It offered some relief
from the life she couldn't cope.

But morning after morning
she'd open up her eyes,
and to her disappointment,
find her prayer had been denied.

This is when she learned
that she was on her own,
that her life didn't matter,
her soul had been disowned.

Sentenced to her life,
without a soul to sell,
she fucked up everything she could
something she did quite well.

They told her that God loved her,
that He would ease her fears.
A lie she wishes she could believe,
even after all these years.

God's quiet voice is often unheard. Drowned out by the voices of our own. It's hard not to doubt him. But in life such beauty abounds and it's a shame not to give him a wisp of credit. He made you, beautiful girl, and I'll give him the credit...and I'm glad he didn't answer her prayer. Remember that song, by Garth Brooks, thank God for unanswered prayer...well yeah. And I'm still praying to win the lottery. We'll see. We'll see. May my next note to you arrive postmarked some sandy beach, where I sit half naked sipping Coladas shouting WISH YOU WERE HERE!

    Remember, Life's a Beach!

    Love ya, Loop de Loop.

    And

As the words stingme deeply I see myself, a child born through hatred , asking my God to take me away. But I am still here and searching for that love and peace. You have touched me poet.

This poem makes me want to reach through time to the little girl, and tell her everything will be OK - but that is a lie too, as bad as any that she heard. How do children grow up, able to love, when they are treated badly? It's one of the miracles of life, for me.

Good poem, the emotion behind it is authentic, without sentimentality, well expressed, without glosses.
