She simply smiled and said, “Hello” to capture my heart.
Arms entwined, kisses in the sunset for only a few days
Had the two of us pledging to share the rest of the future,
Then it was off on that wildest of carnival rides --- life.
As with all fires, the flames of this one also subsided,
Leaving behind that throbbing heat of the embers;
Flames of blue and orange flickering to warm the love
That had developed while basking in bright passion.
Out of this came a something creeping on padded paws
To sneak inside my mind, heart and soul and add to life;
She had also become that most special of people
My friend ---
Years passed and with it came many tales of woe
But the memories seemed only to be things good
Until that day when the sentence was passed with
One single, simple word ----- “Can---”
Then came the fight, and a good one it was to see;
Doctors and machines, needles and medicines.
All the treatments to break down a strong man
Were nothing as she faced it all with that smile.
Then came the night when breath came no more;
The small, frail body left behind as the spirit soared
Up and away from all the treatments and battle
To find peace from the world and be with her Maker.
Left were friends, sisters, brothers, children --- me,
To wander around without purpose, lost, searching
For a way to fill that emptiness we all felt inside ---
And it all began with one simple smile.
A wife, lover, mother of my children, best friend
But most of all, something most people never have
Or really know in life --- a true hero
All was buried deep in the curve of those lips ---
With her smile
Author notes
This for someone not in this world but still alive in memory.

You know, I just hit “return the favor?” after you read my poem. I had no idea I would be getting this! What a beautifully written tribute to the love of your life. To say this touched me deeply would be an understatement. I am so sorry for your loss, but at the same time I am so happy that you had such a wonderful life together! I can see so much of her beauty in this poem.
Having lost my two sisters in the these past two years (one of them to cancer) I know a little of what you must have gone through and are going though. I know there must be nothing, however, like loosing a wife and the mother of your children.
All the treatments to break down a strong man
Were nothing as she faced it all with that smile.
I loved this line for some reason. I think it reminded me of my sister.

Yes, I lost the mother of my children and my wife; even more was my lover and best friend. What really is the basis for this poem is she was something I don't think will be in my life again --- she was my hero; never complaing about treatments or their lack of success, but faced every day of her life with a smile.

Thank you for sharing this deeply personal glimpse into Your Angels Brave Fight!
For a moment in time a ride along ...I too lost a true warrior my beloved little sister Dawn, Your Right! There should be a law in the universe.

Yes, she was my loved one, and still is buried deep in my heart. There should be some rule that prevents illnesses from taking these special people away.

this is a beautiful poem. one that is filled with love, happiness and sadness. You're right some people don't ever get to have that in life.. but there are the ones that thought they would never have actually find it. it's good to read your poems again.
You did outstanding and this was written from the heart.
