Return to the Sea II

Missing image

The day was wanin’ as the maiden looked out on the sea,
her eyes so full with tears, her sighs and cryin’ mournfully
would sure to tear a mortals heart if they could hear her plea,
oh please be takin’ me back home, that’s where I want to be.

She was the fairest mermaid, in a kingdom neath the waves,
The pashion of the mermens hearts a fawnin’ at their raves,
But none she took, her heart was lost to one before the sail,
He was her one and only love he made the others pale

She loved the fire in his eyes, the steel in his frame,
The moment she first glanced on him, her heart was all aflame
She begged that she could leave the sea and wander where he’d go
Oh, father I must leave this place, for I do love him so.

Her father begged for her to stay, my darlin’ don’t you know?
That once a mermaid goes to land, she can’t come back below.
If I should ever lose you don’t you know my heart would break
But she could not be turned the longin’ in her was an ache

She went and wed her buccaneer , they wandered far away,
theirs was the love of legends still survivin’ to this day,
But she forgot that men must die though mermaids never do,
One day when she awoke she found that death had claimed him to.

Oh father please do take me back, for I cannot go on
I’m pleadin’ with you father, for you know my love is gone.
If you won’t have me back again, I’ll drown myself and be,
United with my sailin’ man for all eternity.

But, when she waded in the ocean parted suddenly
There she saw the castle of the kingdom neath the sea
With trident in his hand her father waved her to come home,
Oh, darlin’ I have missed you since the day you left to roam.

So if you were to cast a glance you’d see her there below,
Cavortin’ with the mermaids, drivin’ mermen mad you know,
But they know they can’t have her, no her heart will always be
The willin’ gift she gave to one who sailed upon the sea.

Author notes

Due to my cat stepping on the keys, this song may not be exactly as I first wrote it. The little stinker erased the whole thing just before I was going to submit it. (and lived)
