The day was waning, as the maiden looked out on the sea
Her eyes wear tearin’ up her sighs and sobbin’ mournfully,
Would sure to tear a mortal’s heart should any hear her plea
Oh, won’t you take me your daughter in, have mercy please on me.
She was a mermaid in the realm of Rosha ‘neath the waves,
Her beauty drove the merman mad, she fawned at all their raves,
But took none for her heart was lost to one who rode the sail,
A buccaneer had claimed her heart and made the others pale.
She loved the fire in his glance, the iron in his frame
The moment she first looked at him he set her heart aflame
She begged that she could leave the sea and follow where he’d go,
For she was sure enamored and her soul was all aglow
Her father begged her for to stay, please daughter don’t you know
That once a mermaid leaves the sea she can’t come back below
You’ll be forever lost to me, my heart is sure to break
but she could not be turned the longing in her was an ache
She went off with her lover and they traveled far away,
And sure theirs was a love that had no equal to this day,
But she’d forgotten all men die as mermaids never do,
And one day when she woke, she found that fate had claimed him too
Oh father dear can I come home? She begged that she might be
Allowed to be returnin’ to the kingdom ‘neath the sea
No welcomin’ voice responded as she walked into the deep,
Then if I can’t come home again, with my true love I’ll sleep.
Then suddenly the waves were partin’ and there she could see,
The ramparts and the towers of the castle in the sea,
And with his trident in his hand, the master called to her,
Oh, no my lovely one, for you I surely must demure.
He welcomed her back to the depths and once more she is today,
Cavortin’ with the mermaids causin’ mermen all dismay,
For though she is the loveliest of daughters of the deep,
Her heart is still possessed by he who sleeps eternal sleep.
Her eyes wear tearin’ up her sighs and sobbin’ mournfully,
Would sure to tear a mortal’s heart should any hear her plea
