Willow Tree #

Hanging willow branches wave
As the breeze wafts slowly by
The beauty shows so gracefully
'gainst a lightly clouded  sky.

Clear bright colour,brilliant green
Contrasts with the normal scene
Of dry grass and  stubble
From where a crop has been.

Two months ago those willows
Leaves burnt brown with frost
Would not  draw a second glance
No attraction, all seemed lost

Spring has brought her colours out
Made such a grand display
Will summer add more beauty
Or will colours fade away?

Author notes

Severe frosts reduce the willows in the river to dry sticks in winter and the coming of spring brings back the rich green where they grow.

For some reason best known to herself, Mother nature has made the willows on the river so much more beautiful this year than is usual. Much appreciation for your comments.

Oh, the lovely willow and how we miss her drapery when frosts brown her plush. Mmmmmm...nice poem on the changing moods of nature and even her resilience. Would suggest to change "is" to "seemed" in the line..."No attraction, all is lost." (As all was not lost, it just appeared to be). Lovely write...alby

Thanks Alby, I changed is to seemed, a sublte change also to the rhythm but OK. Many thanks for your helpful comments. The river is just across he paddock from our kitchen window and the willows have just reached their full glory for this year. The summer heat will dull them off in a month or so but they are lovely right now.

Fantastic write Bob Willow trees always remind me of my childhood. We used to go swimming at the channel not far from where I lived. There were lots of beautiful willow trees along the bank, providing lots of shade. Ahhhhhh...great memories indeed. Thanks for sharing this one Bob

I am pleased you have had memories revived by my poem. I see the willows from the kitchen every day. Rain and spring have them dressed in all their finery right now. It's lovely to see. Many thanks for your compliments, Julie; I can accept compliments anytime.

Lovely! It's amazing how the earth regenerates herself and brings back her beauty ... spring is a gorgeous time of year... and summer too! I guess each season has it's own beauty doesn't it!

Jackie, I am blessed with a large window over the kitchen sink which looks out over a rural scene, that is constantly changeing, right down to the river about 600 meters from my home. I watched the willows go from dry sticks to their current lush green. It is amazing how the regeneration process of Mother Nature is so attractive. Thanks for taking the time to comment, I really appreciate feedback.

Oh, Bob. Willows are my favourite trees. This was a beautiful poem about their cycle with the seasons. Lovely flow and so easy to read. Isn't it wonderful watching them just gently sway in a breeze...and in the river. That would have made them even more spectacular. Did you know that willow roots will keep growing up to six years after the tree have been removed. Unlike most trees who only spread as far as the height, willows can seek water for distances you would not believe. A fantastic piece of writing. I am having trouble finding some of your that i haven't read so i was glad when i saw this.

Our kitchen window is a magical place. The scene is always different from that particular window. I can see the willows from the window and these last two days they have come into their own, Soft beautiful green. About half the year I don't even notice them. Today with a few showers of rain those willows stood out in their magnificense. So I wrote this piece.
I have to say how much I appreciate your comments on so many of my poem. Many many thanks for your consistent comments.
