Weekend

Weekend,
weird in the eyes of the world
‘cause it's not the usual Saturday-Sunday
but, Thursday-Friday.
It feels like a Labour Day,
streets and market squares crammed
with construction labourers,
the air filled
with the traces of cement and sweat
and the clamour of hundreds of voices
traveling to distant lands.

11:30 a.m.
Half the day is over for these men
who have started from their camps at dawn
to meet their hometown brothers
living in different cities.

Such a different lifestyle!
I too had a drink or two last night
and slept late like them,
knowing I could wake up late this morning.
I believe in a brunch,
as these men make plans for lunch
and then depart to meet after a week
or maybe even two or three...
as God knows when their next weekend
with be permitted.

They seem so happy
and cheerful,
unlike me who does the usual stuff on a weekend,
and my Bowling this evening,
and the dinner with friends after that,
would not be any different.

I wouldn’t be as delighted as these men
I have seen today,
But for sure, I know I have seen
God in their delight,
and this has made my weekend...

Author notes

I live in the Gulf region (Dubai) where the weekend is a Thursday-Friday. The market squares and streets and other public places, except the extravagant shopping malls are for the construction workers who have this day to make merry. It is ncie to see them enjoy this day after they have toiled for long hours of hard work in the hot sun and other hazards. I think this is where I find God.

I loved this, Lencio! Not many people know, I think, but people holding contests have NO idea who their entries are from until the contest is over! I had so many entries - and yours was definitely one of the finest, among my top! I thank you and hope you will join me in another contest soon. Beautiful entry, beautiful words...and I felt God (and eternity - and pure simplicity of life) in the words you spoke! Much love, Debbie
