Hello, George

Peaceful times
bring peaceful thoughts
in the absence of war
and strife.

He went back to the farm,
the ancient place, where he
sought old friends, memories,
and remnants of a familiar life.

Looking for George,
a childhood friend,
who was no where to be found.
He searched and searched
sought out to say:
"Hello, George"
then go to the fishing hole
on a reminiscent day.

Rumor had it
from the people in town,
George never made it back;
seems he landed
at Tripoli,
never made it out,
never survived that last attack.

A funeral service
was held for he who was lost,
and in the front row,
dressed in black,
his old friend-
who stood and wept
until he wept no more
and wished for the war to end.

Author notes

For Veterans Day - 11/11/08

This poem is loosely based off of the stories my Grandfather used to tell. George is a fictional character, but stands out in my mind as any friend, brother, father, son, or lover who was ever lost in war. May God bless and keep their souls.

The personal touch made this poem very effective. Bringing the tragedy close to home helps all of us realize the loss of just one life.

This is very touching and real. I like its casual poignance.
