gave no hint that he found me, still a stranger,
an unwanted guest, who passed him by ignored
as I walked by the azaleas that he'd
dutifully protected these many solemn years.
I'm sure he wonders of his place in her heart,
whether I have usurped his spot as knightly protector.
It's precisely that same reaction, that molded glare,
which chased me from the back steps--
eleven minutes before, from the accusing blank stare
of the ceramic garden gnome that guards there.
Author notes
Umm, quote number one would seem to fit the best.
Not sure how it fits the Coelho book, but I'm sure if you corner me on it I will make some far-fetched excuse for why it does.

Time has so much meaning...and then perhaps none at all; we have these moments of introspection sometimes really like these inanimate things we focus on...a reflection of something we simnply create... PK

The plastic flamingo's stolid stare at 11 Main Street
gave no hint that he found me, still a stranger,
an unwanted guest, who passed him by ignored
as I walk past the azaleas that he'd
dutifully protected these many solemn years.
I love this part Sir Yem....really like how you wrote it. It gives you the vision of the scene and you zoom your eyes on it
I don't like gnome figures in the garden for some reason
ps... zadee loves the photo of the flamingos...she doesn't want me to turn off my pc or even allow to click it away...[ok since its her birthday] so it took me some time commenting since she's been staring at it for I don't know how long

Ah that's cute! Zadee and I have something in common, I like the flamingo too!
It's her birthday, how cool! How old is she? I remember when Mariza told me she was born, man time is going fast.
Tell her for her next birthday you'll buy her a real flamingo.

Don't read her the poem though, just tell her it's about how much I like flamingos.

She's 3 now, I think you read her mind or she read yours, she was asking me to buy her a flamingo when before all she wants is a pink balloon.

This is a poem ...
that has some ostriched- (under)sized, dreamy sort-of imagery as well as a subtle sort-of undertone, and had this reader enjoying all ! This is a poem within a poem and then some ... Congrats to you Yem or maybe I'm beginning to note that humor becomes you as well as you have some none-sense as well. Have a great day ...

"Ostriched" I like that. That sort of sums up my life.
You are just getting used to my humor that's all. It's like Moxie, it takes a long time to stop tasting bitter.

I am going to cut off your head! BTW, how do I find your head...I mean, I may be psychotic but I do have my standards. If I say I am going to cut off your head and instead cut of your head AND neck, that doesn't look good!

hahaha, way to bring a sense of humor to friday morning! i have to say i personally find the garden gnomes more frightening, but that might be some sort of repressed annoyance at those "travelocity" commercials.
i like your take on the contest, i'm sure you could draw some sort of Coelho reference, haven't come up with it yet though.

Travelocity, that's the name of the company the gnome works for. I couldn't remember. Well I agree, the gnomes are creepy. But the flamingo is Maine tradition, the plastic ones I mean...nothing that says prosperity more than a double-wide trailer with a couple flamingos out front! (See, this is why I need an emoticon, people don't know when I am being silly or serious...it's my job to guide them safely to the right one!)

In his dreams
he saw himself
even grander,
pasted on a
crooked moustache,
the plastic flamingo.

Truly Yemish,
the observations!

damn, that was one helluva chuckle. Enjoyed the write and good luck with the contest.

Thanks, I have way too much time on my hands.

I'm wondering how the other flamingos look up close, whether there's really a difference between them and the protector flamingo, and how THEY feel about the poet.

-
-
Alas, I only have that one photo, but that is ok too because we can just imagine what they look like. In my head, I kind of see one with a handlebar mustache, but that just might be my individual bias since I always wanted to grow one (and join a barbershop quartet)
I've no idea what they might be thinking, but I have a feeling when I am not around, they talk about me...and not in a good way.

"I'm sure he wonders, of his position in her life,
whether I have usurped his place as knightly protector"
I like that line! I'm in an odd mood when some words say what I have in mind, or kind of... hard to put in words what i think when takes more than eleven minutes to make wine effect disappear
I still know what I like though.

-
It's the photo. Who can resist those adorable plastic pink flamingos?
beneath the pathetic humor there's a little truth being told, but since I have had no wine tonight I shall keep that to myself.
Thanks Wino.

I hated the photo, but I saw what is beneath

I really like that photo, it's headed for my author page when I get around to it.
"...these many Solemn years"...he's interrupting that. He probably has some self-doubts, that maybe he isn't worthy, or that it's a heavy burden to bear, that maybe he's not the best one to go about being a protector, of any thing or one...all I know is he's terribly concerned with those lawn ornaments.
