As sun's pure rays dapple the ground
and summer's leaves create sunshade,
laughter from within floats upon gentle breeze
as champagne and iced tea in glasses cascade.
All gathered in friendship, maybe lunch on the lawn
but for now quite content beneath verandah's retreat ,
mixing and mingling, children playing
with hushed conversations, most discreet.
From the outside as I listen, I yearn to be a part
of this group with their sounds of love and affection,
a place of belonging where all seek to share
for here in this house there is no rejection.
Scents of perfume and flowered bouquets
waft to my senses as I listen with awe
my mind paints a picture of these scenes within
of men in striped suits, ladies in hats of straw.
I see them finally sashay out onto the lawns
walking arm in arm in peaceful parade,
this spectacle looms so clear in my mind
as champagne and iced tea in glasses cascade.
