I saw a shiny dot in the velvet sky one night,
and I knew it was the beginning of a brand-new thing.
It glowed like a red-hot pulsating pinpoint of fire,
and it followed me all the way home.
Every step I took, every eerie shadow darting by,
I knew I was safe with my little protector watching up high.
I bounced along, a little spring in my steps,
and watched the night world go round.
Every time it twinkled up in the sky,
I knew that it was smiling at me.
A little knight-in-shining-armour,
a modern-day Romeo dying for its Juliet.
A beating heart, a trailing blaze of flame,
a mass of dark matter and dust particles coalescing
into the form of brilliant star sparks,
exploding in a dazzling cosmic flash and annihilating itself.
Thereby travelling billions of years into
the outer space and letting the starlight shine upon it,
forming a cohesive picture for my wondering eyes,
searching amongst the mass of tangled dust.
I fell in love with a star that night
making my way home from the beginning.
Traipsing one, two, two-and-a-half years
before I finally made my way through.
There are millions of billions of shiny substance
out in the dark cavernous abyss of our universe,
but it was that star I chose, that pinprick of light
that caught my restless eye, the star I fell in love with.
